Sorcery! 3 App Reviews

Finally.

Some small notes based on other reviews: yes this game eats battery like crazy. To beat the time serpent, find the clue near the middle of the map. Its all about time after all. Trust me when you figure it out youll find yourself wondering why you didnt think of that. And as a side note no one asked about. I bought these games for the kindle fire also. Your passwords work across systems. Happy gaming everyone! So the review! Okay! After having played through twice, and poked at the beginning of a third time I figure I can leave a more detailed review. Like another reviewer said, the game truly IS open world. I did contact them to ask about whether its possible to save the fractured world you travel through, and they said no as of yet no. But they said that one particular encounter was reported as a bug quite often when I mentioned i enjoyed it. There is ONE encounter where going backwards will NOT let you make new choices. Instead the person you are talking to says the equivilent of "Really? You tried to rewind time? NAH TOO BAD." When I tried this i laughed so much. Each serpent has a weakness. And you can even TRICK them sometimes. Though when I tricked the moon one he found me again later, so thats probably not the greatest idea. They introduced new mechanics. The slider to take you back in choices to help facilitate the fact that you will want to retrace your steps several times sometimes (I kept going to sleep in a particular tower that was safe because well. It was safe. Sleeeping out in the middle of nowhere isnt safe!) Theres now counter spells, which actually are helpful!! Youll learn them if you talk to the right people. Theres also a shop where you can make a ton of gold if you play it right. I walked out of there with over 150 gold. The ending is...something else. I was staring at the screen feeling vaguely horrified over it. But thats a tale for Sorcery! 4. The best items to get from the first two games are the mirror, skullcap, and green haired wig. Good luck finding them (The mirror and wig i found in sorcery! 2. I BELIEVE I found the skullcap in 1...I forget.) But if you do have those items, they make a lot more options appear. Now I never read the books back in the 80s. I didnt have the money to buy them back then. (I got $5 a month for allowance and they never showed up at the used bookstore I bought paperbacks at.) If you want an idea of how good these games are, game vloggers on youtube were playing through them. Theyre usually super snobby about mobile games. I had a few crashes, nothing major. I was playing on an iphone 5s though, not an ipad mini. This game does eat battery like its a college football team at a buffet though, and I found myself running out of battery on my phone after around four hours of play, which is something for a mostly text game. Also, I cant play my own music in the background, which does make me sad. Its not worth taking a star though, as the other two are the same way.

An oldschool friend

I love Sorcery! I had the pleasure of reading the actual books when I was a kid because my mother collected them when they first came out. Enjoyed every moment. They were so much more in-depth than "Choose Your Own Adventure" books and took a more mature approach to things: the story was intriguing, there was so much to explore and you got to act like an actual adventurer casting spells and battling monsters. It felt like a less complicated, single player D&D campaign. Playing this again on my iPhone has been a blast. I love having more visuals to enjoy while roaming about, while inkle still preserved the great original artwork. The "twist" of being able to change the topography with special items is particularly eye-catching. And of course the writing holds up to this day. This series is a true gem and if youre a fantasy fan you owe it to yourself to see these classics glossed up and presented in such a fun format. Something else to note, Ive always appreciated that you can play an adventurer of either gender and inkle has retained this option. So often youre stuck playing as a male in other (modern!) games yet here a series decades old was bright enough to offer such a simple yet considerate choice.

Disappointing

Had potential but after spending several hours of wandering in an attempt to cross the mountains, my interest has waned. Why cant this game be more accessible to first time players?

Lovely!

Definitely one of my top five iOS games! <3

Thanks

Yay bugs be fixed

1 thing..

This is a great game, but since this update, the game takes longer to process decisions and occasionally will crash. Other than that - its great

Unplayable on an iPad mini

Unfortunately, the current version of this game is unplayable on an iPad mini. Im getting a repeatable CTD every time I attempt to click on the items or spell book icons (which are vital for play). Ill update this review if and when this issue is patched. Updated review: Well, we got a patch promising improvements to the iPad mini performance. Unfortunately that patch made it so that the CTD happens on game start, every single time. The game works on my 5s, so it seems to be a processor issue. The game should state up front that its incompatible with the original iPad mini.

Crashes but still 5/5

Sorcery! 3 and the seven serpents is by far the best out of the three. However I may have to reinstall it since it wont launch anymore. Although I did get plenty of play time in 5 out of 7 serpents beat. This has added and redefined what a game book port can and should be. Also Im fairly sure the crashes are my device not the game. (iPad 4)

Empty & monotonous

Im baffled by all the praise this installment has received and have to conclude that it is out of loyalty to the franchise rather than a sincere assessment of the game itself. Sorcery 3 is definitely one of the more tedious and aggravating games on the App Store. Did the developers test their product by actually playing it through? Theres no point to anything - no point to spending gold on food as it is lost one or two turns later; no point in obtaining helpful items as they are lost or stolen one to two turns later, no point in making choices as the game will steer you where it wants you regardless. There is very little action and interaction, and much of ones times is spent walking, walking, walking, swimming. I should reveal that I did not actually finish the game; I was wasnt able to. If you die at a place where the "rewind" feature is not an option, then you you have to start from the beginning. That means hours and days of progress utterly wasted. The story unfolds too slowly and the intermittent rewards are too underwhelming to make restarting worthwhile. If you are on there fence about whether or not to play this latest installment, save your money.

Great but lackluster end

Awesome game, ridiculously well made, incredibly well executed concepts, beautiful art. I wish there were more interactive game books like this. The end feels very anti-climactic compared to Sorcery 2, but thats not really the developers fault, just where this section of the story ends. Still, when get to the end of this beautiful, interesting story, be aware that youll probably think: "Thats it? Thats the end? Well, thats lame." Regardless, highly recommended if you like this sort of thing.

Sorcery 3

This was a waste of money. I made a move the had me die but there isnt any option to start the game over, Im dead and cant do anything else in the game. I want a refund.

Excellent!!! But not without some flaws.

If youre reading this and you have not played the first two games - stop what you are doing and get the first two games now. Just do it - they are amazing. TLDR - buy this game, it is extremely good. This iteration of the series adds some very cool time based gameplay. Also, the interface and interaction feel more polished than the previous games. Other reviews have said that this game feels empty compared to the prequels, but I disagree - the game just has a broader scope I think. It is an excellent game!!! If you liked the first two this one will not disappoint you.

Great game!

A little different style of play from the first two, but still an excellent game! Only one crash and everything recovered fine. Because it is more non-linear, the story isnt as "tight" as the others, but still holds up. When I think about the complexities involved in trying to craft a game like this, I would say they did a great job pulling things together.

Awful

This game is one of the worst I have ever played. Absolutely do not waste any time or money here.

Theyve done it again.

Absolutely brilliant. I didnt get the best ending on sorcery 2 but I dont want to go back to replay it. So far this is 100% better and I loved part 1 and 2!

Hours of enjoyment!

This is a great game. Ive played all 3 installments in the series so far and have spent countless hours at work reading this and ignoring my job entirely. At $5 a pop it seems like $15 well spent in my opinion. I see a few negative reviews about not understanding the rewind mechanic, its simple and effective, those reviews should be ignored. Bottom line 5/5.

Superb Twist

This installment is a great upgrade to the first two. The time-traveling adds a great nonlinear element to the gameplay as well as making the world more evocative and immersive. Superb job by Inkle taking the original book and changing it from a meh intermediate step into a haunting place of tragedy and loss. Well done.

Great

Use the towers to help you beat the serpent of time.

Superb Game!

This game was a worthy addition to the Sorcery! series, and improved on it it many ways. Interesting story, lots of different places to explore, beautiful visuals, and fun combat, lead it to be an amazing game. It is definitely worthy of your 5$, but I suggest you play all of the games in order, as they are also amazing games. Thanks inkle for this masterpiece, and I cant wait for the fourth installment!

Perfect third game

Follows the same formula of the first two games as well as adding more items and features. @Luffpuppen There is usually an area to rewind to and you dont even have to kill any of the serpents to beat the game? You must have not played the other games and obtained items you shouldve had. Or your just not seeing the solution to the current puzzle.
